Marrakech Residents Take to the Streets: Fleeing the Night or Staying Out?

It was a stormy night in Marrakech, Morocco as residents were forced into the streets due to the ongoing conflict in the area. On the eve of the start of the holy month of Ramadan, hundreds of families were displaced and left without anywhere to stay.

Many young people took matters into their own hands and improvised makeshift shelters out of anything they could find in the area. Plywood boards were placed together and cardboard boxes were laid out to make sleeping space. Others were forced to sleep on the streets out in the open, with only mats and blankets to offer little cover from the inclement weather.

As the night wore on, the number of people on the streets kept increasing. The already cramped streets filled up with refugees from all over the region searching for a piece of land to call their own. It was a heartbreaking sight, seeing the look of despair in the faces of those who were stranded with no other option but to wait out the storm.

The locals of Marrakech did their best to help out, offering blankets, food and other essentials to anyone in need. Many sympathetic volunteers worked tirelessly to provide support and ensure everyone’s safety.

At dawn, life slowly returned to normal as those who had spent the night in the streets started making their way home. Those who had fled the city had begun to come back as the conflict in the area had calmed down. But for many, the memories of that night will stay for a long time to come.
